Randy Karl's Story
I've never quite left the academy since leaving home.
I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1991. I continued on to the London School of Economics that fall, finishing my master's degree in 1993. I worked for a couple years at Penn in a research institute before going to Harvard to get a PhD in Public Policy (from the Kennedy School of Government), which I completed in June 2002. I joined the faculty at the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy at the University at Albany - SUNY as an Assistant Professor in September 2002. On September 1, 2009, I was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. I took over as Chair of the Department of Public Administration and Policy on August 31, 2009. I became Associate Dean of the Rockefeller College in March 2011.
On March 1, 2015 I was named Interim Dean of the Rockefell...Expand for more
er College. On April 20, 2018 I was named permanent Dean of Rockefeller College.
I am currently working on two programs of research: one on collaborative systems of public service provision and the other on terrorist organizational networks. The later program of research is supported by the Department of Defense through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Strategic Command (the guys with the nuclear missiles), Pacific Command, the Office of Naval Research, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and the Office of Secretary of Defense. I also have grants from the Department of Homeland Security (Domestic Nuclear Detection Organization) and the New York State Office of Homeland Security.
I've been married to Jodi Kerper (we met at Penn; she's originally from New York City via Richmond, VA) since October 1994 and have one son, Ben, who was born in 2000.
